Vehicle Maintenance

Correct handling of vehicle combined with proper maintenance prolongs engine life and contributes to fuel savings of up to 10%. This brochure will assist you in finding your way under the hood and make you more conversant with what your workshop can do for you.

FACTS ABOUT TUNE UPS

  1. Tune up can improve your fuel economy by 4 to 12%.
  2.  A too rich fuel to air mixture will lower fuel efficiency.
  3.  A too lean fuel to air mixture can cause misfiring of engine damage
  4.  Spark plug timing must be set to specifications.
  5. Clean and properly adjusted points will produce fuel efficient firing.
  6.  One spark plug misfiring half of the time reduces fuel economy by 7% and two can reduce it by 20%.
  7.  Too high an idle speed wastes petrol.
  8.  Revving the engine Just before switching off the ignition consumes extra fuel and may cause engine damage.

PETROL AND OIL SELECTION

  1. Always use a multi viscosity motor oil New modified or slippery oils are designed to improve mileage by as much as 3 to 8%.
  2. Dirty oil causes added friction and engine wear.
  3. Petrol grading (octane number) Is dependent on anti Knocking additives in the fuel.
  4. Select regular, super, hi octane or make blends by mixing super and hi octane to suit your vehicle
  5. .Use fuel octane level just high enough to prevent engine knocking.
  6. A higher than necessary octane rating does not improve a car's mileage Octane number is a measure of petrol blends to resist knocking

Vehicle Maintenance

Proper maintenance will optimise the fuel efficiency of a vehicle It will also prevent breakdowns and costly repairs and improve vehicle safety. Most procedures that ensure operational efficiency and maximum fuel economy are simple to perform and need no special tools but awareness and initiative Other procedures require a good mechanic

HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR CAR NEEDS A TUNEUP?

Keep fuel consumption record (km/litre. When this average drops by 10-15% your car needs a tune up

WHAT IS AN AUTO TUNEUP?

An auto tune up consists of checking engine's performance by monitoring all systems contributing to the efficient combustion of fuel.

WHAT ARE COMMON ENGINE PROBLEMS?

  1. Idles fast when warm
  2. Stalling
  3. Low power
  4.  Idles rough
  5. Knocking
  6. Hard starting
  7. Misfiring
  8. Rough running
  9. Engine runs on  with key off
  10.  Black exhaust smoke

WHAT SYSTEMS ARE CHECKED DURING A TUNE UP?

  1. Starting system
  2.  Fuel system
  3. Charging system
  4.  Exhaust system
  5. Ignition system
  6.  Engine block

WHAT IS CHECKED IN THE STARTING SYSTEM?

Cranking revolutions per minute (rpm) and battery condition.

WHAT IS CHECKED IN THE CHARGING SYSTEM?

The alternator or generator, the diodes and the voltage regulator (cut-out) must be checked. Improper charging will destroy the battery.

WHAT IS THE IGNITION SYSTEM?

The ignition system comprises of the coil, condenser, distributor, CB points, high tension cables and the spark plugs

WHAT IS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM?

It is the system through which the exhaust gases ere emitted into the environment They consist of Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydro Carbons (NC) Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) and Lead (pb).

WHAT IS THE PERMISSIBLE LEVEL OF CO & HC?

In a properly adjusted carburetor, CO will vary from 1 to 2.5% and HC value will vary from 150-450 porn (parts per million)

WHAT DO HIGH EXHAUST EMISSIONS INDICATE?

Improper adjustment of the carburetor and corroded parts of the ignition system.

HOW CAN CO & HC BE MONITORED?

An exhaust gas analyser or an engine analyser will detect exhaust emissions.

HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE TO WARM UP THE CAR IN THE MORNING?

After 30 seconds warm up the car should pull away without stalling If it doesn’t pass this simple test, your car needs some tune up adjustments Allow a longer warm up period in cold weather.

Do-It- Yourself Maintenance Checks
Inspect V-belts monthly. Replace worn glazed or torn belt
Check engine oil every fortnight Remove dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it and remove it again. If oil level is low, add oil
Check radiator  water /coolant level weekly. Do  not remove radiator pressure cap when engine is hot
Keep windshield reservoir full  and keep the wiper blades clean. If wiper blades are worn or brittle, replace them.
Look  for signs  of oil seepage on shock absorbers Test shock action by bouncing car up and down. The car, should stop bouncing when you step back.
Replace worn or leaking shocks Repair shocks in pairs i.e. both front shocks or both rear shocks or all four
Ensure all lights are clean and working including brake and reverse lights, turn signals and emergency flashers.
Check battery monthly in co ld weather, weekly in hot weather and daily on tong trips. Make sure cables are attached securely and free of corrosion Check battery fluid level, if need add fluid
Check for loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. Check for holes in muffler or pipes. Repair or replace rusted or damaged parts

AUTO WASH & SERVICING TIPS TO REMEMBER

  1.  Never spray diesel oil under the hood in the engine compartment, as this will deteriorate rubber parts boots and seals
  2. Preferably steam wash engine compartment and use high pressure hot water for cleaning vehicle body
  3.  Always use vacuum cleaner for removing dirt from car interiors Using high pressure air only relocates the dust and dirt on the roof inside display panels and on upholstery
  4.  Schedule axle and wheel bearing lubrication checks

REPLACEMENT PARTS

Replace parts at the following intervals. For more accurate information consult your car manual
  • Spark plugs at approximately every 10,000 km.
  •  CB points at approximately every 5,000 km.
  • Air filter when clogged or dirty.
  • Gear box oil every 40,000 km.
  • Oil filter every 10,000 km.
  •  Fuel filter every 10,000 km.
  •  Engine oil every 6,000 km
